Why cleansing/detoxification is good for your health

Written by Chipo Shambare

Medical studies reveal that toxins and chemicals are stored in your fat cells contributing to obesity, loss of energy, and many other chronic de-generative diseases.

Much is written about how our environment is being polluted with toxins and harmful substances and how these pollutants are affecting our wellbeing. Our bodies, our food, our air and water, are constantly exposed to a harmful toxins.

What is a toxin? A Toxin is defined as any compound that has a detrimental effect on cell function and/or its structure. Toxins can damage the body in an insidious and cumulative way. Once your internal detoxification systems such as the skin, liver, kidneys, digestive system, the lymphatic system, become overloaded then toxic metabolites begin to accumulate and block the natural flow of the bodily systems not just the flow of physical material but the flow of energy.

You begin to get tired easily and become congested; your emotions go up and your intelligence goes down; your physical body starts to complain and sometimes breaks down.

Also, you become gradually more sensitive to foods and chemicals, some of which were normally non-toxic to us. It is this accumulation of toxins over a period of time than can cause havoc on your normal metabolic processes, thus causing many health challenges such as allergies, addictions and fatigue.

The more toxins in our system, the faster we age. More and more people are recognizing this and looking for ways to help themselves by self-treating; and some have discovered Detoxification and Cleansing.
Here are a few reasons WHY many people are searching for and following a cleansing /detoxifying system.

North Americans are suffering from new diseases such as chronic fatigue, tiredness and overweight. They present with one or more of the following:

  • I need more energy
  • I am not feeling well… feeling tired and drained
  • I keep gaining and losing weight but cannot seem to keep it off
  • I want to get rid of these headaches
  • I never stop eating and thinking of junk food such as chocolates
  • I don’t seem be motivated to do anything
  • I am sick and tired of feeling bloated all the time

These alone are just a few of the general everyday complaints expressed by those who are seeking help.

Besides the medically labelled conditions that are costing the healthcare system millions of dollars such as arthritis, heart disease, cancer, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, joint pain, migraines, etc., have you or anyone you know complained of lack of motivation, lack of energy, feeling constantly bloated, or losing weight through dieting just to gain it all back again?

Here are some very interesting statistics from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). USA.

The number of adults who are overweight or obese has continued to increase. Currently, 64.5 percent of U.S. adults, age 20 years and older, are overweight and 30.5 percent are obese. Severe obesity prevalence is now 4.7 percent, up from 2.9 percent reported in the 1988–94 Survey.
Do you think we in Canada are far behind? I don’t think so. Just take a look at the grocery cart of the people around you next time you go grocery shopping.

Several years ago, an acquaintance of mine sent her 10-year-old daughter to weight loss camp for the summer. I was shocked at this, but when I looked at the girl’s diet I was speechless. I was shocked at the non-nutritious foods this girl ate not mentioning names there was no nutrition values to her diet what so ever, white flour, sugar, and plenty of empty calories.

An example would be pop drinks for breakfast and this was the only thing she drunk and no water what so ever. Many people are sick and tired of being sick, they are now looking for alternative ways to help them feel better or to correct the symptoms that have plagued them for many years. In my professional practice and personal life, I have noticed that when a person is not feeling well, feeling tired, drained, maybe gaining weight on and on, there might be something else eating them inside. We live in a very toxic world… our environment, our food, water, air including our bodies and minds, are full of toxins.

The human system cannot handle all these pollutants so it starts to speak out loud and if not listened to or taken care of, it starts to break down. But why wait till it is broken down? Surely it is better to fix it sooner rather than later.

Toxins are foreign to the body In order to keep these toxins alive the body attempts to protect itself by surrounding the non-desirable toxins with fat cells. This is its own way of protection. Fat weighs quite a bit and it tends to hang down and protrude because it does not have any muscle support. And all this drains energy from the body. The mind is kept busy trying to figure it all out… finding solutions, justification, judgment, criticism, making opinions and what ever else the mind focuses on.

When the body systems are out of alignment one tends to get depressed, bored, unhappy, unsatisfied, crave foods, especially junk food, and so on. During this time most people tend to gain weight; occasionally one may loose weight. The metabolism is out of balance and also the immune system slows down and becomes weak. When feeling this way, the motivation factor is less active and you start to not feel good about yourself, your life, your relationships, your work, and your self esteem which includes self acceptance, self love, and self approval.

When there are a multitude of things within competing for your energy you do feel drained, tired, over-taxed: the mind becomes stressed, forgetful, less alert, fatigued, loss of memory, slow and foggy thinking….and on and on it goes. Are you one who feels stuck, confused or overwhelmed with what is happening around you? Maybe it’s time to break this pattern and start to discover who you really are …to bring out your own authenticity and your light to your daily life.

The big question to ask yourself is: “What is it inside me that I am feeding?” or simply put, “What is eating me and the food I eat?

Supportive and encouraging energy is available to help you improve your
situation…to balance your life. It is your turn now to take care of yourself. Don’t wait for someone else to tell when and what to do.
